SCSI & MMX problem/error

PC Problem: CD RW & DVD player stopped reading CDs few weeks apart. New CD
RW installed worked only few days then it too stopped. The LED blinks few
time that's all.

Got PC-Docter Demo diagnostic software, it reported the following:

1. SAMSUNG, DVD-ROM SD-612S, SCSI error 1100H
reading bloc **** failed

2. CDWRITER, IDE5232, SCSI error 3A01H

3. Test SCSI: Auto-Diagnostic - EXECUTION IMPOSSIBLE

4. CPU test OK, but certain tests were not executed e.g.

EXECUTION IMPOSSIBLE for :
- MMX Arithmetic
- MMX Logic
- MMX Transfer

Reason : DIAGCPU.DLL couldn't be loaded

5. RAM test OK
6. HD test OK


H/W : Compaq Presarion, Athlon CPU, 1 Ghz, mb MSI 6330
S/W : W2K Prof

Help wanted (please) to translate in plain English what those error are ?

PS: Other than reading or burning CDs the PC is working fine.

Enable Autoplay for the drives with TweakUI:

Check if DMA is on for the drives:

Control Panel, Sytem, Hardware, Device Manager, then click on Ide
Ata/Atapi controllers then either Primary or Secondary IDE channel then
Advanced settings.

My IDE Channel Advance Settings:
- Autodetection
- DMA if available

The Primarary DMA transfer it is Not available !
The Secondary (RW) transfer is DMA mode

TweakUI generated the following error:

" The procedure entry point GetDLLDirectoryW could not be located in
the dynamic link library KERNELL32.dll "

Searched MS kb, see what I've found:

Windows 2000 : This resolution may also work in Win 2000, if TweakUi was installed prior to upgrading the OS ... This is not my case
Also, I reinstalled VIA Master Bus IDE Controller. It searched and found something closer match to my H/W than was installed. OK, OK restart ---> No change.

Bought / Installed new ribbon IDE cable ---> No change

I'm getting frustrated to say the least, What next ?

Let's get this DMA business fixed first. Check out what's the latest in
Via Bus Master IDE Controller.

Done it. Upon reboot the same values were re-installed and no change at all.
The DMAs for the two drives are reset as per

Via Bus Master driver update was applied recently. It didn't make a
difference. During trouble shouting, the system found another driver closer
match, perhaps the older version !!!

The BIOS shows PIO enabled and UDMA enabled as well.

One thing I am considering is a clean install of W2K.
What are the chances after a formating the hard disk that it will recognize
the W2K CD ?
Can't afford to be without a PC/Internet connection.
I have the W2K four emergency floppies, and the Win98 startup floppy.
This time however, I prefer to do FAT formating vs NTFS actual for the the
simple reason if I boot from Win98 floppy I can see the HD contents.

works couple of times. This is how:

- My Computer
- Manage
- Storage
- Removable Storage
- Physical Locations

There I found my two drives each listed two times, once with with a RED
button and white X on it (Not available), and the second time normal. They
all showed "Empty" even if I have CD inside.

I deleted the RED entries, Reboot, Retry Encyclopedia CD, Refresh Drives...
BINGO it works.
Had harder time to get it to read the second original CD "Age of Mythology",
but it recongnized the title at least which is improvement over nothing. The
two week old burner didn't work at all !!!

If anything this proves to me it is Software not Hardware.

Back to my question if I format the HD to do clean install.

What is the risk it will/won't recognize W2K install CD ?

PS: Have Win98 startup and W2K 4 floppies

Simply deleting any references in 'device manager' Win systems causes CD
hardware to be redetected and associated with the correct drivers again
when you reboot. It is one of the *usual* first basic steps to repair
CD device trouble; before you start screwing around with the registry
and tearing your hair out and all...

I'd have helped you out earlier if you hadn't been quoting all that SMH
psychosis, propagating the defamation of MR, for everyone to read who
has that a'hole killfiled too. Thanks for not including it here.

Try right-click the drive, Properties. Any device information show up?

Try deleting all the drives - including the ones without white X.

Before formatting, go thru the motion: Reboot with startup disk and the
