scsi flatbed scanner..

Why does it take so long until XP sees my scsi scanner when I've switched it
on for use?
I've to go into the device manager and manually "scan for hardware changes"
to make the scanner appear. Is this normal? Hasn't ever been an issue with
98SE as it was ready for use (instantly) as soon as the device was
internally Ready.

help..

Because SCSI pre-dates Plug n' Play and turning on a device doesn't
necessarily alert the processor that anything has happened. Actually, in my
experience you often have to reboot with the scanner on to make it recognize
it.

Don't bash my SCSI device! Funny then that it worked *perfectly* with 98SE -
no delays and instant access once the scanner was ready.Glorious XP not up
to this?

I hope they drop support for even more old devices. It can only help to make
the O/S even more stable!

Come on Steve. It's *old*. You can get an USB 2.0 scanner for under $100. It
will run rings around your old Win98 scanner.

So what can one do with an USB 2.0 scanner for under $100 when there are
only USB 1.0 ports on the (my) mobo? Do you suggest to buy a new mobo as
well? Sorry, no free slot for a cheaper usb 2.0 port card.
See, Rich, things are not always that easy as u like to see it!

;-)

greetings from Brisbane (Australia)

Steve
