Screwed Up Registry/Services

P

I recently installed PC-Cillin, which seems to be seriously incompatible
with something else on my computer. It would give me the blue screen of
death shortly after the network login screen. So, I tried to uninstall it.
But I couldn't, since it had not completely installed. To make a long story
short, I had run a diagnostic startup, using msconfig, with only a few
services loaded on startup. That worked. However, I could not get it to
boot with a normal configuration. The problem kept recurring, so
eventually, after using msconfig to restore the registry values to normal,
on startup, I told it to boot with last known good configuration.
Unfortunately, that was the diagnostic startup from msconfig.

Needless to say, although my computer boots up, nothing works. Even the
network connection window is empty.

I wanted to hunt for some old startup configurations. I managed to access
the System Volume Information directory to look for some snapshots of the
prior registry values. It only had one. Even worse, Recovery Console will
not work. After running it from the Windows XP CD, it asks for the
administrator password (which there is none). Even when I change the
administrator password, it gives the same response. I found a KB article
that says that I need to install the recovery console to the computer, and
add the Q308402 Hotfix. Unfortunately, there are two problems. First, I
cannot get the hotfix, and second, when I try to install the RC from the CD,
it refuses to do so because I have a later version on the computer than on
the CD (I have SP2 on the computer).

So, what can I do? I have lost all network services, and lots of other
stuff as well. (If only I had installed Goback, I could have just used
that!!!)

Thanks.
