Screen Icons/short cuts rearranging

In the last two days I have turned on my computer to find the on screen icons/ short cuts were a larger size and rearranged. I resized them and placed them back to their normal positions. Tonight, I had a program lock up, the icons dissapeared off my desk top, then reappeared in a different location. What is happening? Can I stop this or easily replace them without moving each one individually?

Right click on the desktop. Try Allign to grid. Try other choices if that
dosen't work.
