Screen fonts and icons.

I have tried the smooth screen fonts option in Display options in order
to make my fonts clearer, which has improved the view to a certain
extent. Icons on the desktop still seem quite dark and fuzzy though.
Does anybody have any advice on how to sort this?

Since we don't know:

1. What kind of monitor you have
2. What video card you have
3. If you are using a specific font instead of system default

it is not possible to give you focused advice. Some general suggestions:

1. If you are using an old CRT monitor, replace it with something newer.
Flat panel monitors (LCD's) can be much easier on the eyes and have
come down dramatically in price.

2. Try using the Clear Type Tuner from MS Power Toys:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

3. If you have a very old video card, consider replacing it or try
upgrading the drivers. Get drivers from:
a. The device mftr.'s website; OR
b. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
c. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

4. Clean off the monitor if this hasn't been done in a while. Never use
glass cleaner (like Windex) on a monitor. I use a 1/2-1/2 solution of
isopropyl alcohol and water.

5. If you are using a fancy font, try using Tahoma instead.
