Nice to hear back from you Ace,
I put my 'solution' in a 'Re: Screen flipped sideways - update' message on
8/10/07, not expecting anyone to be still following the original.
For continuity:
It turned out that I had a 'double' problem.
First in that an earlier updating exercise of the Intel 82865G card driver -
the last issued for this device - had been of a driver with a glitch in that
caused the 'can't find strings'. The Intel fix for this was to uninstall
the driver; change the system language; install the driver; change the
system language back. It works! I can only surmise from this, that the new
driver was in development but was unfinished when support for the product
was discontinued.
An interesting observation during this exercise, was that when the Intel
driver was removed and the system restarted, my icons and fonts came back
about 4 times bigger, and a message came up to ask me if I wanted XP to find
better settings for me. Would I be better off without the Intel driver, I
wondered?
(You should also note that I have a similar discussion under photos which
turned out to be the same 'screen' issue and I might be duplicating some of
that here. This problem is that, with my accustomed monitor settings,
pictures change perspective when rotated, but if I reset the monitor to
'optimum' I cannot find a usable set of appearance options for both text and
dialogue size.)
The lack of rotation was due to a second adjustment I had made some time
ago, when advised that higher screen refresh frequencies were better for the
eyes. I had reset the frequency from 60-75Hz...
Once I had the Intel configuration screens available following the above
exercise, I could see that the options for 180 degree rotation were
available, but for 90 & 270 they were greyed out. Surprisingly, when I
reset the screen refresh to 60Hz, these options came back!
(I then rotated the screen and jumbled up all my icons...)
As it happens we have the same drivers on our pc and laptop and had updated
them together, so both had the same fault. These are Dell m/cs, and, as, I
recall, it was the Dell site that linked to the Intel site for the updates,
so I assumed the 'Dell' driver was Intel's. As, either way, the Intel one
is not supported any longer, and seems to have had at least one glitch,
might I be better off looking for another driver, and if so, where and what?
Thanks once again,
S
