Screen display of 8 1/2 x 11 shows at much wider

I've got Page Setup set to 8.5 x 11 with 1-inch borders, yet the screen
display shows the page as much wider. It's really weird and I've tried
changing a bunch of things to no avail.

Can anyone help me understand why?

Thanks, but none of this is helpful... I am in Word 2003 and in Print Layout
mode. Zoom has no bearing and have tried several zoom levels. Change
Tracking is not on (as noted by the TRK indicator at the bottom toolbar which
is NOT highlighted.)

I've tried resetting all Page Layout things to Default and no changes.

I've posted a screen image at www.bobhatcher.us with the Page Layout dialog
box up.

If I don't get this solved soon I'm going to start a new document and start
over so any help would be appreciated.

You have a reviewing area at the side of the document, where balloons are
shown somewhere in the document. Do you have any comments in the document?
Or any tracked changes - just because change tracking is not on now, it does
not mean it was not on some time in the past? You can switch balloons off
under Tools > Options > Track Changes (tab) > Balloons (section).

Ok, it was the Track Changes thing. I still can't figure it out since Track
Changes wasn't enabled, but there were a few places where the explanation of
the changes showed up on the right hand side. After accepting the changes
the document went back to normal.

Why would the track changes notifications appear when Track Changes is
turned off?

I'm confused.

Turning off Track Changes stops further changes being tracked; it does
nothing to changes that have already been tracked and they must all be
sepaartely accepted or rejected.

Having Tracked Changes turned on or off controls only whether new changes
are tracked. It has no effect on whether old changes are still in the
document, and hence whether space is allowed on the right side to display
them. Only the Accept Changes and Reject Changes commands do anything to
remove the tracking of old changes.

explains this in more detail.
