After i login to windows a minute later the screen dims, kind of like when
you get a user account control message, but it never gets bright again. Is
there anything i can do. I tried system restore in case it was a recent
update and that didn't work. The mouse cursor is still normal brightnesss so
its not the video card or LCD. Very strange hope you can help me!!

Does the system still work otherwise? If it does work, it may be that a
power control profile is loading that includes a less-bright monitor
setting.

More details and description might be helpful.

Check what ICC profiles are being used for your screen in Control Panel, and
see if one is being used in your graphics card's control panel. It would
take about a minute to load up if you have a lot of startup items. It could
be that it is being applied twice, or something like that. I remember
something similar happening in Photoshop, as it was using the Adobe Gamma
ICC profile on top of the one I was using for the monitor, or something like
that. I forget, as it was a long time ago, and the problem itself was
pretty confusing.

I just had the same problem on my Toshiba Vista laptop. After restart, about 1.5- 2 min into the boot, after the desktop has come up and programs are loading, the screen dimmed like it does during a User Account Control prompt, but no prompt came up. I wasn't sure if I was going crazy or what... everything worked normally, I could still change the brightness (lower) but everything was dimmer. I still don't know what caused it, but I fixed it by going into Catalyst Control Center (I was lucky enough to have an ATI card), going to the Color tab, and clicking the button that says "Reactivate ATI color controls". Very weird problem, I tried a bunch on other fixes first, including turning off UAC, none of which worked. Let me assure you, you're not doing anything wrong, if the brightness is turned up all the way and it's still dim, it's a problem with something in Vista interfering with the output of the video card. Try looking in your display settings if you don't have an ATI card, hopefully you can find an analogous solution. Good luck.

I also have the same problem; NOW. I did not have this problem before, it appeared after I downloaded the last "important" update. I believe it was in early July or late June! I also have a Toshiba Lap Top.

Just happened to me. Microsoft problem reporting identified it as a Flash
player problem and advised uninstalling the flash player (using removal
program from Flash/Adobe) and installing the latest version
