Scrabble by US Gold

I have the original Scrabble by US Gold on floppy, this runs OK on Windows 95 and Windows 98, but games won't load on Windows XP. The ownership check code won't display, so cannot get past the first page. Have tried compatibility programme in XP, but this does not resolve it
Any help would be appreciated.

Did you install from the beginning using Compatibility Mode? If not, try
uninstalling what you've got, then insert the floppy, go to Start/Run and
browse to the floppy for the install.exe or setup.exe file. Right-click
that file and get to the Compatibility tab. You should be able to then run
it from the start, with the program thinking it is in the native operating
system for which it was designed. After it installs, before trying to run
it, go to the link you'll use to launch the game and again right-click,
invoke the same Compatibility settings, etc. and OK your way out. I would
pay attention to perhaps running it in 640x480 mode with 256 colors, and see
if that helps. Those settings are also available on the Compatibility tab.

Thank you for suggestion of using compatibility mode from the beginning. I have tried doing this and following all your instructions, but it still does not work. Do you have any more suggestions?

I'm out of ideas, Sally, since it is a very old game. Have you checked
around to see if there's a more current version of it, or at least updates?
Perhaps Jimmy will have something up his sleeve when he drops by.

Hi,

There's some alternatives to that older version of Scrabble itemized here:
http://www.gtoal.com/wordgames/scrabble.html I think the US Gold version
was developed before Windows 95 was produced, and is therefore a DOS game.

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm For sound
issues use: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound Good Luck! :)
