SCR3310 USB Smart Card Reader no longer functions after the WindowsMalicious Software Removal Tool

When Windows Update automatically installed:

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2005 (KB890830)
Date: Wednesday, March 09, 2005
Source: Automatic Updates

this broke the smart card driver installed in Windows XP. Device
Manager now shows:

- Other Devices
? SCR3310 USB Smart Card Reader

I cannot get this card reader to function again in Windows XP. I have
tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and Windows XP will no
longer configure the SCR 3310 USB card reader.

Are you sure this was the only update you downloaded from the Windows Update
site?
Hardware updates can also be delivered from here that are more likely to
mess up the device.

Try rolling back the device driver for the reader using Device Manager:

1) Right Click My Computer and select "Manage"
2) In the left hand windows select "Device Manager"
3) Double click the Smart Card Reader device to bring up it's properties
4) Click the Driver tab and click the Rollback Driver button

If this does not work you could try restoring to the last system restore
point before you did the update.

Let us know if this helps you out

The SCR 3310 card reader had been running fine in Windows XP SP2 until
the "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2005" update ran in
XP SP2.

I tried updating the installed driver, but it would not update -- did
not find an updated or existing driver.

When I try the 'Roll Back Driver', a dialog window shows:

No driver files have been backed up for this device.

If you are having problems with this device you should view the
Troubleshooter information. Would you like to launch the
Troubleshooter?

I clicked Yes. The New Hardware Wizard window opens, select 'Yes, this
time only', click Next, click Next for 'Install the software
automatically', Hardware Update Wizard searches for an updated or a
driver for the 'SCR3310 USB Smart Card Driver', and it actually finds
the driver. I clicked Finish where the New Hardware Wizard did update
the installed driver:
