scannow problem - sp3

I have read in these threads the problem when running sfc /scannow regarding
the request for the xp cd and the error message that the cd is wrong. I have
installed successfully (I think) sp3...the problem has been that my computer
is randomly just shutting itself off and restarting.

I am trying to rectify this via scannow...and ofcourse the computer is
requesting the cd and mine is not current with sp3...is this the correct
approach to fix this problem of auto reboot ? I have tried the adware
removals, have scanned for viruses many times coming up clean..

My only option in my opinion is to do this scannow and am stuck with the
request for the cd that is not current with sp3..

please

| Bondpwk,

| I've avoided that problem by making a slipstreamed disk which contains my
| original Dell Restore Disk and Service Pack 3. Now when I run sfc it does not
| try to change back to old file versions.

| Making a slipstreamed disk is a little confusing, but not really a big
| problem. Have a look at this:
| http://www.howtohaven.com/system/slipstream-xp-service-pack-3.shtml and just
| follow the instructions.

Additionally...

If you copy the slipstreamed i386 folder to C:\

In the registry go to...
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

and change; SourcePath
to point to; C:\

You won't need a CDROM and the OS will find the required SP3 level files automatically w/o
user intervention.
