HP Officejet v40xi connected via a USB cable
Have installed latest drivers / siftware from HP. THe scanner shows up in XP on my computer but when I click properties I get an error message saying " The properties for this device are not available" The scan button on the machine gives a cannot connect to PC message when pressed. The printer works fine, printing from many different aplications. It just appears that something is not right with the install??? Any suggestions??

Hi James -

There is an issue with the driver file usbscan.sys that ships with Windows
XP. Basically, if you attempt to install a multi-function device, such as
your all-in-one printer, scanner and copier and the scanner isn't the first
device detected by Windows, the printer and copier functions will work, but
the scanner won't.

Microsoft has identified this to be a problem and has a fix available.
Check the following article on Microsoft's Knowledge Base:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320549&Product=winxp

(link may wrap)

In any event, the fix is not available for download. You have to contact
Microsoft Support directly to obtain it. If you are only requesting the
updated driver file there will be no charge from Microsoft Support in order
to obtain it (you simply explain that you need the fix because you have a
multi-function device where the scanner is not the first interface of the
device and they will supply the driver for you via e-mail).

Hopefully this helps you fix your problem.

Jef
