Scanner and Camera Wizard won't launch

D

Deanna

I've got XP Home, SErvice Pk 1 and when I connect a
digital camera or slide in a compact flash card to my
computer, the Scanner and Camera Wizard initially
launches but then sits there--for hours. I can see the
camera or drive in my computer and can transfer them that
way--but I'd like to use Scanner and Camera Wizard.

This is a new install of XP. The last install of XP--this
feature worked fine with this computer and same cameras
and compact flash cards.

Any help?

Thanks

I don't know what you mean by "The Scanner and Camera Wizard initially
launches but then sits there--for hours"
So the wizard launches, what do you see on the screen? The wizard launches,
it is there on your screen. Does it offer to do anything? Are you clicking
with your mouse on something that the wizard is listing that it can do?
Give us a little bit more of what is happening and what you try to do and
somebody will help.

I've seen so many posts about this problem(a problem I am experiencing as
well) and most of the questions people ask or the responses given don't
clearly reflect what is actually going on. I think what most people are
experiencing is that when you plug in the camera, auto play runs and gives
you several choices of what you can do with your pictures...BUT, when you
click on copy pictures to a folder, nothing happens at all, the scanner and
camera wizard never ever opens, the same thing also happens if you click to
view as a slideshow. So the problem is not the fact that autoplay doesn't
work, its just that when you tell autoplay what to do, nothing happens.
there must be some sort of fix,,,maybe in the registry ..like the handlers
or something?? I dunno...has anyone fixed this particular problem yet?
Thanks ~ Jeff

Maybe some of the following info will
help you solve the problem. It seems
that what works for one user may not
work for another.

============================

Possible ways to restore AutoPlay:

I. Connect your camera to your computer,
power it on and make sure you have
pictures on your memory card.

II. Go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.
This will take a few seconds to run.

III. Read the following KB article:

(817357) The AutoPlay Function Does Not
Work and the Current Media Does Not Appear
in My Computer When You Insert a CD or DVD
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817357

Download the Microsoft
Autoplay Repair Wizard:
http://tinyurl.com/jt1h

Download the autofix.exe file to your
desktop. Once done, double click on
this file. A window will open. Follow the
directions on the screen.

Once done, turn off the camera and
reboot.

IV. Power the camera on, wait 10-15
seconds for XP to recognize it, you
should hear some beeping sound and
the window should now open giving
you the option of downloading photos
from the camera.

V. You may have to set the options for
this window. Click on My Computer,
your camera should be listed there
under Devices with Removable Storage.
Right click on it and click on Properties.
In the opening window, click on the
Autoplay tab and under Select, scroll to
Pictures to select it. Select the button...
Prompt me...

Here is the previous fix.

Go this site:
http://tinyurl.com/7g4k

Fourth item from the top of the page. Two
fixes are presented. One is to edit the
registry, the second one is to download
Tweak UI and do the repair with it. If you
are comfortable editing the registry, go
ahead.

If not, download Tweak UI.
http://tinyurl.com/36n

Once you download Tweak UI file in one
of your folders, double click on it to install
it.

Once this is done, click on Start and click
on All Programs. Look for Power Toys for
Windows XP. Click on it and Tweak UI
will be listed. Click on it to get it started.

A window will open. Click on the + sign
next to My Computer, then click on the +
sign next to Autoplay. Then, click on Types.
Check the boxes for Autoplay Drive Types
and click OK.

============================

If all else fails...purchase a USB memory
card reader.

Good luck.

Good. Now we get the message. Your information is very good describing what
is happening, not something we normally get. We normally get "this does not
work, can you fix it". Now, with your information about why it does not
work, we have to try to solve the problem. You have to help us to try to
solve the problem. I will try and others will try. Here is my suggestion.
Try the following.
Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in opening textbox:
REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press the Enter key.
Note that there is a space between ...32 and ...SHI and also there is a dot
(period) between ...GVW and DLL
After you press the Enter key, it will take a second to run this repair
command. Then, try your camera again.
Now, if this works or does not work can you let us know? Either way, let us
know. If it works, fine. If not we have to find another way to fix the
problem.
Solutions or suggestions are posted here by many. However, we seldom get "It
worked" or "did not worked". I can understand your frustrations about this
problem and previous suggested solutions, but if we don't get anything back
we have no idea if the suggested fix was good, bad or irrelevant.

I tried this fix some days ago after doing extensive research on this
problem and it did not work, I have also tried it several times since. I
have also tried the autoplay repair program, I have tried leaving the camera
plugged in and powered on during reboot, I have tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the camera, and I have found updated camera drivers but none of
these procedures has fixed the fact that when autoplay runs and you click on
"copy pictures to a folder"...nothing happens at all( and if you keep your
eye on the process viewer...no new processes pop up). Thank you all very
much for your interest in this problem
Sincerely, Jeff

It launches. I click on the "copy pictures to" box
and ... nothing happens at all. It just sits there for
hours. All my other programs work.

I tried to run that DOS command. I got this
response: "Library not found" And something about Syntax.

I have the same problem. I have tried the AutoRun fix,
although my AutoRun was never broken. I tried the steps I
through V as described, and it still doesn't work.

I turn on my Digital Camera, the AutoRun comes up. I
choose to copy it to a folder. Then nothing happens.
That's it. It just stalls. I'm glad to hear that some
security patch has screwed it all up. I had suspicions
that it might have been after installing Macromedia
Dreamweaver MX 2004.

Please email me if we find a fix.

Scott
