Saving pics from web problem

P

pomahony

When trying to download pics from a website, I am only
being given the option to save the pic in .bmp format.
It does not allow me to scroll down to .jpg format because
it's not listed.

How do I change it ??

I've seen replies to this question before which suggest clearing your
Temporary Internet Files. Try that and post back if it doesn't solve the
problem.

You got some bad info there, as the Temporary Internet Files cache has
nothing whatsoever to do with the File Format of files on web pages.

If the pic (file) is in .bmp format, then that's what it is. You don't say
what method you're using to "download", but I'll assume you're using either
FTP or a web browser. I'm not aware of either having the built-in
capability to convert file formats on the fly, which is what you're asking
for. You can however change picture file formats using a program such as
IrfanView, or other graphics/viewer program. Hope this helps.

Apparently you [Joe McArtuhr] don't use Microsoft IE to download graphics --
neither do I. Apparently, however, IE has a bug such that no matter what the
actual file format is on the web page, the "save as" dialog that is displayed
by IE only permits the use of bmp as an extension. Of course, the actual file
that's saved is no doubt in its original format, it's just called a bmp. The
received wisdom is that this condition is cleared up by clearing Temporary
Internet Files. Don't ask why -- this is Microsoft software.

I agree with you, the widely accepted remedy is to clear
your TIF files. again it's a microsoft hole..

I do use IE, and do on occasion save an image from a web page (right click
on image, then Save Picture As), and have never encountered this problem.
I've used IE versions 4, 5, and 6. I was not aware that such a bug
existed; thanks for pointing it out.
