Saving 'mht file types?

C

Cuyler

I have routinely saved web pages to my hard drive by
choosing the file type option 'mht'. This eliminates
all those pesky sub-folders and 'gif files.

Now, for the past week, I'm getting an error message pop-
up labeled 'Error Saving Web Page' and the dialogue 'This
web page could not be saved'.

And not even 'secure' sites, but something like movie and
TV listings and such.

Has some security setting changed in my browser (MSIE
6.0) or has some fundamental modification in web page
design put this feature into some sort of 'restricted
mode'?

Have you done anything with Outlook Express lately like try to reinstall IE? What is your operating system and IE version?

George,
You may have hit it out of the park! I just last week
set OE to be my default 'news reader' vs. doing the
online web pages reading.

Does this affect saving web pages to the 'mht format?

Yes. Outlook Express has to be correctly installed for mht to work. Why? Haven't the foggiest but that's the way it is. And is one reason why I always tell those that want to screw around with their Outlook Express they are cruising for a bruiser.

Oh crap Windows XP. I was afraid of that. Let's try this. Go to Start | Run | regedit | OK. Go to this key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}]

You will see a IsInstalled dword:00000001

Change this to IsInstalled dword:00000000

Now reinstall Inmternet Explorer 6 off the web.

Reboot. Now try saving a mht at a place you know it should work.

HTH.

Thanks for the settings George. But to download and
reinstall MSIE all over again is more trouble than I care
to indulge in just for the sake of being able to use OE
as a news reader. The web reader works just fine.

Wonder if it's possible to 'deselect' OE as my News
Reader and return my PC to its previous state?

What I told you has nothing to do with having an Outlook Express that works for you. I really don't care if you use it or not. What I told you is how to get back the ability to save as mht. You can try the following but I cannot vouch if it will do anything for you. Just make sure you change the entry in the registry I told you to change before you try this:

In Run put:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\Windows\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

OK

That is supposed to "fix" IE. I have no idea if it "fixes" Outlook Express too or not. You could always try making new profiles in Outlook Express. But the fix I gave you earlier is your best bet for getting the save as mht back.
