'saving as' bitmap. yeah, I know. an old story...

Having read many times in these ng's what to do to get an image file to save
as a .jpg...it just isn't working for me. I scrupulously clean all temp
files on a regular basis with a couple of utilities; even lowered their
settings to 100Mb from 300 in Tools/Internet Options. What else may I be
either missing or not doing?

thanks in advance

I've noticed that occasionally...even when temp
files are not the problem that I have only the
..bmp option. If I refresh the page...the .jpg
option returns.

Maybe something is being missed, have you
tried navigating to the folders and checking
the content?

Here's one way: Right click your Start button
and from the menu...choose...Explore...drill
down to...C:\Documents and Settings\Your
Account\Local Settings\Temp....and Temporary
Internet Files. Empty the Temp and Temporary
Internet folders.

(If Zone Alarm is running you cannot delete the
ZL xxxxxx.tmp file until Zone Alarm is closed)

Here's another way...

Open an IE window and go to...

Tools / Internet Options / General tab...

Left click the "Delete Cookies" button / OK.

Left click the "Delete Files" button / OK.

Left click the "Delete Files" button again and
check..."Delete All Offline Content" / OK.

Left click the "History" Button to clear your History.

Also, go to...Tools / Internet Options / Advanced tab...
and place a check beside..."Empty Temporary
Internet Files Folder When Browser Is Closed"

Running Disk Cleanup (all options) on a regular
schedule is a good idea also.

Not a good idea to reduce it to 100 MB.
Instead, increase it to 1200 MB so you have space to work with.

Thanks for your suggestions, John.

I'd seen most all of them in this and other ng's. In my particular case it's
a reluctance to deleting *all* my saved cookies (haven't figured out a way
to cut & paste them back again), as well as the 3-days' history kept on my
computer. A routine has been to do a "%temp%" run command and then try (key
word there, as Explorer won't allow certain files to be given the axe) a
deletion everything there...

Speaking of which: most every time I open that \Locals~1\Temp file there are
five bitmaps, always the same ones. On checking them I can't for the life of
me figure out how they got there (not having been to any site where they'd
been visible).

Oh well...looks like if I'm unwilling to do all that it takes to be able to
save a measly file every now and then I'll have to continue to keep on
adding numbers to the usual 'untitled' file name Explorer creates.

grazie again, John
