Save stops working in Word 2007

I've been using Word 2007 about 2 weeks (I'm a longtime Word user, just now
getting 2007), and all of a sudden today my save button no longer works. I
click Save and nothing happens; then I hit the space bar and the save icon at
the bottom of the screen acts like it's saving, but nothing saves. The Save
on the Word Button or whatever it's called doesn't work, either. All I can
get to work is Save As if I save to a different location. I can't have files
littered all over my machine; has anybody seen this, and is there a fix?

Thanks,

Jeff K

UPDATE: It appears that my documents are in fact saving...Word is just not
letting me know it with any graphical demonstration. Could there be a save
setting somewhere I'm not aware of, since I'm new to Office 2007? I now have
to rely on my memory to tell me whether or not I've saved, which is a
dangerous proposition. :)

Word has never had any "graphical representation" of the saved state of
documents except a change in the title bar on the first save. The best plan
is to press Ctrl+S frequently. If the document is not "dirty," Word won't
save it, so this does no harm. And if you should try to close a changed
document that hasn't been saved, Word will prompt you to save it.

OTOH, if you mean the pulsating diskette icon in the status bar, then no,
that is not available in Word 2007, but the amount of time that would be
displayed depends a great deal on how fast your processor is and whether or
not you have background saves enabled. Most saves of ordinary documents
happen so quickly that you would likely see only the briefest flash in any
case.
