When I try to save my password for retreiving mail from outlook it won't do
it. The window asking if I would like windows to save my password come up but
even when I click the yes box it will n ot save it. Any ideas why? I have
windows xp home. I also have another machine running windows xp home and it
saves passwords without problem. The one that won't save it is a newer machine

This fix applies to Outlook and other programs that store passwords
in the Protected Storage System Provider sub-branch of the Registry.
It also corrects some issues with Internet Explorer and Autocomplete.

Those instructions are great, but I don't have any subkeys under Protected
Storage System Provider. Skipping that step does not lead to a solved issue.
What do I do?

Once you provide Full Control for that key, for your user account, the
sub-keys will become visible. Don't forget to refresh the registry view by
pressing F5.

That's not working. Could this be the problem?:
To view or edit 32-bit keys from the registry of a computer running Windows
XP, 64-Bit Edition, you must use the 32-bit version of Registry Editor in the
%systemroot%\Syswow64 folder. You must close the 64-bit version of Registry
Editor before you can open the 32-bit version, and vice versa. There are no
differences in the way you perform tasks between the 32-bit version of
Registry Editor and the 64-bit version of Registry Editor.

To open the 32-bit version of Registry Editor, click Start, click Run, type
%systemroot%\syswow64\regedit, and click OK.
That sounds nice, but I don't have a syswow dir and searching for it turns
up nothing.
