It seems all my music files that I have in Windows Media Player has found
their way to MS Anti Spyware Quarantine. I need to reformat both my h/d's and
cant get them out of quarantine to back them up. When I try to with MS/A/S
the program locks up. Any suggestions?....Thx Guys!....Flyback

First thing to try--don't assume that a process that takes a long time is a
lockup--open the quarantine UI and leave it there--overnight if necessary.

If/when that works, please MOVE the MP3 files to a different location before
the next reboot of the system. There have been reports throughout the beta
of files disappearing after recovery from quarantine.

If that process really fails, I have one message in these groups from a user
who was able to recover working directly with the quarantine files. I'll
find that message and relay the content in this thread later tonight.
Quarantine is a folder under \program files\microsoft antispyware--you could
make a backup copy of the files there as a safety measure, but don't mess
with them directly unless it is clear that the un-quarantine isn't going to
work.

The other process involves using software which understands MP3 file format
and can extract the title info from the files in the quarantine, and use
that info to rename the files--but I'll find the message with details about
how to do that later.

OK - here's the original post from On_The_Path:

See if this makes sense to you--if Un-quarantine fails, you need to rename
the files in the quarantine folder to .MP3, and use the Abander program he
mentions to rename them using the content which is still there in the
files--artist, album, etc.
---

Our MP3's were also put in the Microsoft Antispyware quarantine folder( all
3,000 of them). We also were not given the opportunity to "unquarantine"
Kazaa as the window in the program showing what was currently quarantined
was
blank. We could play the files from the Quarantine folder in Media Player
but
they had been renamed with a number and letter string. So I found a program
called Abander Tag Control 2.6 Beta 3
(http://www.softartstudio.com/tagcontrol/ ) which finds the tag of an MP3
file and allows you to rename it with whatever info like artist, album, etc.
It is a nice interface and it does the job. It's shareware with a 10 day or
so trial. I needed to add the .mp3 extension to the frustratingly
AntiSpyware
renamed files in the quarantined folder and use Abander to retag them with
the real titles.

Bill, Thank You for the quick response to my problem. The MS Anti Spyware un-quarantine wasnt working. Every time I tried using it it seamed to lock up. When I would try and close it I got the 'program isnt responding' prompt. I d/l the program you suggested and it work great!...I had about 2000 mp3's I was about to send into Cyber Space...lol Many thx guy...your a life saver!...Flyback

We owe the thanks to On_The_Path for posting that in the first place. I'd
had some conversations with folks and knew that this method was
theoretically possible for much of the period of this beta, but so far you
and On_The_Path are the only ones I know managed this recovery--that's great
news--the agony of folks in your position, or worse yet the ones who hit
delete, has been one of the greater pains of this beta.
