Save Icons on Favorites List

When you save a site in your "favorites" sometimes it is saved with a special
Icon representing that site. I used to go into my explorer and find that
favicon in the Temp internet files and be able to save it permanently and
associate it with the favorite listing so it did not disappear when I cleaned
out my temp files. With XP, I cannot find where those are saved. Can
anyone help?

As near as I can tell, they're at: C:\Documents and
Settings\(Your Name)\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

I know how you might save yourself the wear and tear of
associating each found icon with a favorite.

AM-Deadlink ( http://www.aignes.com/ ) is a freeware program that
primarily checks the validity of IE favorites or bookmarks from
other browsers. If there is a favicon for a site (for both IE
and Opera), at your request it will save it to any folder you may
specify and permanently set the association.

Here is a small free utility that will restore all your icons when removed
by clearing your TIF:

Boy, that goes to show you how long it's been since I've downloaded anything
from them.

It can also be found here:

Hi Old Bob - These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they
normally will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

You need to get a program called FavOrg 1.4 here:

http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip
http://uk.geocities.com/personel44/files/favorg.zip

or Version 1.2 here:

http://www.liemar.com.br/construindoseusite/downloads/favorg.zip
http://www.themes.myqth.com/Downloads/favorg.zip

(still free at these links) which will allow you to save them permanently
in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the stored icons.
(It will also verify whether your links in Favorites are stll good, BTW.)

If you want to read more about it first, go here:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,9883,00.asp

You can also try FavIoncizer, here:
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp?target=favicons I've used
this and it's quite good,. It will actually find about a third more than
FavOrg does (since it checks for referenced URL's), but lacks some of the
other cababilites of FavOrg, Recommended.

A third alternative is AM-Deadlink, free, here:
http://www.aignes.com/products.htm "AM-DeadLink detects dead links and
duplicates in your Browser Bookmarks. If a Bookmark has become unavailable
you can delete it from your Browser. AM-Deadlink checks Bookmarks from
Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla and Netscape. Additionally you can
download FavIcons for Internet Explorer and Opera." Recommended

Jim, you might want to try your links to Favorg. Only one of the four works.

WOW!! Y'all are wonderful. I was pretty sure my icons just recently
disappeared, so I called XPSP2 support. The "fix" they gave me did not last.
For your amusement, it was: select the favorite/r click/properties/change
icon/delete the fav/tools/internetoptions/deletecookies/delete files/close
browser/open browser/go back to the site/readd!! I'm too embarrassed to tell
you how many times I did that.

Thank you all.Really

If for a single site, you can download the .ico manually.

Visit that site and create a shortcut of it to the Desktop
Right-click the URL shortcut, and Send To > Notepad

Look at the line reading IconFile:

Example:
IconFile=http://www.google.co.in/favicon.ico

Now, type http://www.google.co.in/favicon.ico in the browser window and save the .ico file locally.

You're welcome George. The View source will also display the favicon path, this is just another method :)
