save as problem

I'm experiencing an interesting problem with my excel since a few days
ago.

By default when you want to save a document with another name in Excel,
then after you select save as, Excel wants to save it in the same
directory where the original file is. Since a few days ago, when I
select save as, Excel wants to save the file in the default directory
(set in Tools -> Options -> General tab), and I have to browse to the
correct folder.
I did not install any programs or updates.

Is there a way to change this setting back to default?

Thanks for Your help in advance

Kind Regards

Gauss_chan,

Jim Rech posted this, and maybe it will help you:
Original message:

I want to open a file that exists in one directory but
have another directory default when I "save as". I used
to be able to do this with the following shortcut but
can't get it to work with Excel 2002.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10
\EXCEL.EXE" /p "d:\time\2002" d:\time\timesheet.xls

Any ideas? Thanks.
Jim Rech's reply

Excel 97 had a bug/feature that Save As defaulted to the current directory
rather than the directory the workbook was opened from. I hated it and was
glad to see that it was fixed in Excel 2000 and 2002.

But you can get the old functionality back with a registry entry (use the
RegEdit.exe program). Under

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel\Options

add a new Dword key named AlwaysSaveToCurrentPath with a value of 1.

This means in that all cases Excel does a Save As (not a Save) to the
current directory, not just for your shortcut. Your /P parameter sets the
current directory to a different folder than the file is opened from so this
should also work for it (although I didn't test it.)

Thank You for your reply Bernie

The trick with the registry entry is working. :)
