Save As fails after Windows Update applied

After applying the latest MS updates, I find that the "save as" option
will often fail. This has happened on 2 separate systems, while all of
my unpatched systems are working fine. The option works on simple
pages, while failing after appearing to save all of the elements on a
more complex page such as www.msn.com.

The error reported is "Error Saving Web Page" - "The Web page could not
be saved to the selected location."

I have installed Firefox on the two failing systems, and it saves the
pages without an error. The saved pages can even be read by IE.

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015 (15 Apr-06)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx has
been revised to v1.1 to reflect the issues in KB918165 and now points
to the KB918165.

Now may not be the time to learn Regedit.
I suggest you use a .reg file already done for the purpose.

http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select
Merge and confirm when asked.

Thanks for trying to help, but that article does not address any
problems with regard to the ability to save web pages to disk, nor
does it address the error message, "The web page could not be saved to
the selected location."

I did try the fix posted in the article anyway... it did not solve the
problem.

this is from my post of 4-19-06 in windows update group. it provided an
answer for me. it basically says that after i installed 912812, some web
pages will not save in 2 of the 4 listed formats under "save as" in I.E.
ottmar freudenberger provided the answer.
thank you, len kiesling

from 4-26-06 reply:
where i'm at now:
i installed the 912812 update on my machine. the other machines already had
it. i checked various web sites on all machines to see if they'd save.
i NOW realize, that after 912812 was installed, on all machines, only some
web pages can't be saved in the complete & archive format. [...]
msn.com is one that can't be saved.

Aha, I can repro that for msn.com - hm, me thinks, that's some kind of bug
which happens on sites which don't use relative but absoulte paths for CSS
style sheet. We've seen that in previous versions of IE too, depending on
the Windows version.

Looking at the source code of that site, you'll find
<style type="text/css">@import
url("http://stc.msn.com/br/ushp/css/2/USHP.css")
and so on. That would support the theory above.

I'm sorry to say, that you're stuck with that for the time beeing - until
this may be fixed "by accident" in an future update.

BTW: FireFox f.i. doesn't have that problem...

Bye,
Freu"I hope, a MVP will forward that to the right places"di

Well, holy s**t. That is totally unacceptable. I've basically just
been royally screwed then. At this point it is looking like this WILL
cause me MAJOR problems with my job if I cannot get this "update"
uninstalled.

i can still save those web pages in the html format & as a text file. not
all pages are affected.

in my case, when i manually removed the 912812 thru add/remove in control
panel, i was able to save the problem web pages in all 4 formats again.

i have since reinstalled the 912812 & save the problem pages in the html
format fine.

i checked a few other machines. this experience was consistent in 4 dell xp
pros, 1 dell xp home & 1 gateway xp home, with the 912812 installed.

Trying to 'File Save As Web Archive' htm, anywhere on my drive this webpage:
http://digital-music-guide.classes.cnet.com/lesson-3/

It's a bogus message, probably about uncached advertising images.

For example, you can create an equivalent archive file by using
File, Send > Page by E-mail... and then doing File, Save As...
with OE. Change the extension from .eml to .mht if you want
it to be opened by IE instead.

Ah--ha ! Trying to guess what html does 'in the dark'. Good enough for my
current imagination. Thanks.
