Satellite broadband and the network

Hello. Here in Northern cyprus we have a brand new
Satellite broadband system, (but somewhat primitive). When
I look at my network places I can see everyone else who
has subscribed, and on some of them I can examine their
drives. Sadly they can print to my printer too, so I get a
lot of expensive advertising coming in. Some of the other
users that I can se I cannot access because tey are
pasworded. How can I do this to my computer to stop them
getting at me? I run XP professional. Any tips would be
appreciated.
I also link in my laptop through a personal hub, and my
wifes computer. I dont them to be interfered with either,
although I would like our family computers to be able to
communicate.

You need a firewall between your family computers and the rest of the
people on the Internet. Without a firewall, your computers are
vulnerable to many types of attacks that a password can't prevent.

The best solution would be to:

1. Replace the hub with a broadband router.
2. Connect the satellite system to the router's Internet (WAN) port.
3. Connect your family computers to the router's LAN ports.

That would let your family computers access the Internet through the
satellite system and communicate with each other, while using the
router's built-in hardware firewall to block everyone else.

Another possibility is to:

1. Add a second Ethernet adapter to your computer.
2. Connect the satellite system to the second adapter.
3. Enable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on the satellite
connection.
4. Enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the satellite
connection to share Internet access with the other family computers.

i have two ethernet cards .. one to the satellite and one
to my hub where the family computers are connected. The
isp apparently dont know what to do ... it's all new to
them as well. The XP firewall is up and running. Remember
we are in an unrecognised country and anything that needs
electric to make it work is a novelty! AS for a BB hub ..
I'll have to get one sent from the UK or something but
that sounds like the best solution if this system ever
gets off the ground. Thanks for your time ... please see
my new posting re making it work in this country 'TRNC
broadband'
