SATA + PATA = Slowdown?

Hello
My computer's main drive is SATA.
I recently added a second drive that is PATA (or IDE if you prefer).
I have been able to get Windows XP home to recognize the disc, and I
formatted it. the ide disk is run as a slave. (pins are set correctly, and
set as slave on BIOS.)
However, ever since I've connected the second drive, it takes 6-7 times
longer to boot up Windows (so slow, one could mistake the computer as being
frozen). Once loaded, everything seems to be going at the normal speed.
Why is it booting so slowly?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

It sounds like your BIOS placed the IDE drive before the SATA drive in the
boot order. Go back into your BIOS and ensure that your SATA (often listed
as a SCSI device) is set as the FIRST bootable hard drive.

In BIOS my boot sequence is : 1. diskette 2. cd drive 3.hdd drive 4. network
within hdd drive, the first to boot is the SATA drive.
so unfortunately, thats not the problem
any other suggestions?

Since you connected/configured that PATA HD as a Slave on either the Primary
or Secondary IDE channel, is it possible that the Master device on the
channel is an optical drive and is using a 40-wire IDE cable instead of a
80-wire IDE cable?

Assuming the IDE cable is not an issue, have you tried installing the drive
as a Master on either IDE channel? Same problem?

I've tried setting the drive as Master, Slave and Cable Select; all result
in a slowdown.
I don't think the IDE cable is at fault; if i have patience XP will load and
the drive shows up...
Why the slowdown? How do I fix it?
