SATA drive problems

Hi all,

This post is related to one I made earlier regarding file delete/rename
problems I've been having.

The problem I have is when I have my WD200g SATA drive connected to my
system as a 3rd drive, files on my IDE drive can become locked. eg, my
antivirus program won't update, MIRC keeps creating a bunch of .tmp files as
it can't update the normal scripts, etc. As soon as I disable the SATA
drive, the problem goes away.

The SATA is HDD-2, and I have 2 seagate IDE's as hdd-0 and 1 (they are both
on the primary IDE). I'm using an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard flashed to
the latest released bios (1008), and everything appears to be working fine on
the SATA drive - eg, I've installed Windows Home with SP2 on it, ready to go
as my primary drive when I have enough time to set up everything else.

My IDE boot drive has Windows Home SP1 installed, and should be reasonably
up to date re updates (except SP2).

I'd like to know if there is an easy way to transfer settings across for
programs I select, as the FAST wizard looks to be a little too indicriminate
to me from my experiments with it so far. I don't want to do a full
transfer, as I'd like the new install on the SATA drive to be as clean as
possible. My current install is glitch free as far as I can tell (except for
this current issue), but it's been up for a long time.

All ideas, comments and suggestions welcome.

Update..

My system has two HD's on the Primary IDE, and two opticals on the secondary
(DVD-rom and DVD burner).

Is my problem related to already having 4 ESDI devices, and then hooking up
a SATA as well? (the troubleshooter raised this as a possible problem)

I'll test this next time I have to reboot by disconnecting my second IDE,
but so far I've powered off more times n the last week than I've had to in
the last 12 months. lol. I usually avoid the 'trial and error' approach to
resolving problems where I can.

I have the same mobo running with 1 sata ,1 IDE drive and 2 DVD burners.
I exchanged a DVD-rom for a DVD burner and the system would not start.
I disconnected the IDE HD and the system started. This was with a 350w middle of
the road PSU.
So I am wondering if your HD is not getting the power it needs to spin up
properly and therefore becomes locked.
I solved my problem by purchasing a 425W PSU.
Hope yours is as easy to solve.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the reply.

I've got a 400w psu, and I'm using a regular 4pin power connector to the
SATA drive.

I did try powering off and disconnecting my DVD burner to see if that made
any difference, but it didn't.

I think my IDE drive's file system must be somewhat damaged, as I can't
complete a check disk scan on it (as per my other post), but why it behaves
differently when I have the SATA drive connected is what I can't figure out.
It certainly behaves itself when it's not connected.

I think I'll check out the Seagate site and see if they have a util I can
use on the IDE drives..

Cheers,

Brian
