Same problem looks like a trojan

My daughter discovered a trojan on her PC. Updated
versions of McAfee Virus Scan, Adaware and Spybot Search
and Destroy would not remove the trojan. I am not sure
she had recently updated her Windows XP updates.
Everytime she runs Internet Explorer, she gets this Virus
Scan message: Name VKGAVGNM.SYS
found in folder c:windows\system32\drivers\
detected as a downloader-va
detection type trojan
status deleted.
date today
application ie
Anyway, when she tried to install MS AntiSpyWare, she got
the same date installation error. I suspect you have
this trojan. If anyone finds a resolution, please email
(e-mail address removed)

Hi BoPeep,

Looks like you have your hands full.

Here is the MS Knowledge base that goes thru the cleanup:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;894278

The write up indicates that this is part of a rootkit install, thus it is
quite a serious issue IMVHO. I would also do a free online virus scan thru
PandaSoftware or TrendMicro.

If you are in the U.S. or Canada, you can dial 1-866-pcsafety, and get free
help from Microsoft PSS staff trained to help with issues related to viruses
and trojans.

They don't support the Microsoft Antispyware beta product, but if you
describe the bug you are seeing, they should be able to talk you through
getting it cleaned.

In other parts of the world, call your local Microsoft Subsidiary.
Equivalent free help is available, although the telephone call may not be
free.
