Safely Remove Hardware

Wesley Vogel

Hi all;
I just installed XP as an upgrade, yesterday in fact, had Win98,
reformatted HD used Win98 disk as qualifying disk only did not reinstall and
installed XP.
D-Link DCM-200 Cable Modem, installed w/disk that came with it. Later
went to their web site and d/l, updated to newer, signed XP driver. Have an
icon on the Task Bar, next to the clock, Safely Remove Hardware, followed
instructions, removed a couple of times and reinstalled. Icon went bye-bye.
But keeps coming back.
Safely Remove Hardware icon still there. I don't want to remove the
hardware safely or unsafely. I want to remove the icon without removing
hardware.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Wes

1. Right click on the Start button.
2. Choose Properties.
3. Select the Taskbar tab.
4. In the "Notification area" section click Customize.
5. Under Current Items select the notification you want to hide.
6. In the dropdown box under Behavior set it to "Always Hide".
7. Click Ok on all dialogs.

Hope that helps.

I don't think that I would remove/hide that icon. They usually show up
with poorly written USB device drivers. I have a sony USB floppy
that when I plug it in to a USB port the icon show up. When I want
to unplug my USB floppy drive I rclk the icon and a message comes
up that says it can be safely removed.
Just for what it's worth.

Frank;
I appreciate your reply. I have hidden the icon, it is just a click
away. Near as I can tell, I have no problem with my USB cable modem, poorly
written drivers or not it works.
Thank you.
Respectfully,
Wes

For those of you interested in how I solved this, read on down. I don't
remember how I stumbled across this, but I did.
My Computer/Add-Remove Programs/Add-Remove Windows Components/Networking
Services/Universal Plug and Play was unchecked. I don't know if it was
something I did, probably. Anyway I checked it. Blah, blah, blah,
restarted my machine and the Safe to Remove Hardware icon was asta la bye
bye.

This may be of interest...

Thank you for your reply. Most of the articles @ the link you provided
are a year or more old. Is this still a problem? I just hate it when I
have to use duct tape on my computer.

After doing some more research, I disabled Universal Plug and Play for
security reasons. Also removed it in Add/Remove Windows Components. The
Remove Hardware Safely icon is baaaaaaaack.
Anybody else have this problem?
