Safely Remove Hardware program

i just recently got windows vista so i dont know all the ins and outs of the
software yet, but i installed some updates that i had in the window tray and
once i restarted my computer a icon popped up saying "Safely Remove Hardware"
and has a listed item. i guess my question is what is this program and how do
i know that it is o.k. for me to go ahead and remove this hardware? if you
could help me out a little it would be great

Do you have a USB device plugged into your computer by any chance? The
program you're asking about prepares devices for ejection, so that dataloss
and/or damage to the devices themselves is prevented. Stop any device with
this tool, before you unplug it.

yes i do matter of fact. i have a wireless key board and mouse that uses the
usb ports. so then if i run the device i might have data loss to my mouse and
keyboard?

No, but now you know what's launching the Safely Remove Hardware tool. Don't
worry too much about the keyboard and mouse, what's really important is to
use the tool when you're ejecting storage medias, such as USB memory sticks
or HD's.

oh and one more thing it says that its a SCSI Disk Device now i dont think
thats the usb port, but its saying its at bus number 0. now would the bus
number be the usb terminal?

I was going to mention that possibility.
Once, back in the XP days, I got that systray icon and it referred to a hard
drive (SATA, I'm pretty sure).
It didnt seem to me that it's supposed to be there. But there were lots of
folks in a newsgroup and on planetamd64.com who argued that it was supposed
to be.
I managed to get rid of it.

If I recall correctly, this happened to me when I had to reinstall XP and I
probably chose the wrong option when it came to installing drivers (I
believe these were Nvidia drivers on a CD that came with the motherboard).
So I went back and reinstalled and did not install those drivers and the
icon was gone.
But that doesn't sound like the process you went through to make the icon
show up, so I may not be of any help to you. But then, there may be people
who argue that icon is supposed to be there.

The USB controller is probably associated with that bus on your computer. I
don't know why it should show up as SCSI, unless there's some kind of
USB-to-SCSI adapter on your external keyboard (not very likely). What
happens with this listing when you disconnect the keyboard and mouse?

It may also be that the updates you downloaded have caused a problem. Can
you check if you downloaded any hardware drivers? (Control Panel > System
and Maintenance > Installed updates.) Generally, you're better off
downloading hardware drivers from the manufacturer's site than from Windows
update.

think it has to deal with that. so i went along and tried to complete the
removal it said that it couldn't be completed b/c the component was still in
use. so i wouldn't know what it is that i'm using, since it comes up as some
kind of disk driver. but i only have my normal dvd-r rom and my cd-r rom
drivers. i also looked at the installation list and didnt see anything that
came up as a disk device

Try to find the hardware specifications of your computer, either in a manual
or on the manufacturer's home page. Look for hardware hooked up with SCSI.

If you can't find any, I suggest you try a system restore to a time prior to
the update you did before experiencing this remove tool behavior.
