Safe to remove hardware message

I just upgraded to Vista Home Premium last weekend after FINALLY getting
drivers for my Sony Vaio computer from Sony. I just LOVE the OS, however I
seem to have one small quirk. Each time I boot up my system, I have an icon
on my right side taskbar to "safely remove hardware". It seems to think I
have my jump drive plugged in. It's not. I have even plugged in the jump
drive and then clicked on safely remove hardware and stopped it. I thought
that might do it. But, it didn't. Does anyone know how to stop this from
coming up with each boot when nothing is plugged in? Any answers would be
appreciated.

I believe that is by design if you have memory card readers, etc., just right
click Start Orb, select Properties, Notification Area tab, Customize button,
highlight Safely Remove Hardware, select Hide from the drop down list.

That particular fix is if the device is not listed. My "mass storage device"
is listed. It seems to be getting a notion that the device is plugged in
when it's not. I can click on the mass storage device and click on stop. It
then tells me it's safe to remove it. It never was there to begin with.

thanks for the prompt reply :)

The only problem I have with hiding the icon is that when I AM using the jump
drive, will the icon appear as needed? I am at work so I can't try it. But
when I get home I will try to hide the icon and plug in the jump drive. If
the icon does not come up, will I be able to safely remove it without losing
the contents of it? Thanks again for the help.....

You can also choose "Hide when inactive", or if you do hide it, when you want to
remove the drive, just click the left pointing arrow to get to the icon.

I do not think that the "nag" of a small icon should be permanently removed or
disabled. In fact, I think it is a very dangerous and foolish thing to do. For
safety's sake just choose "Hide" or "Hide when inactive" and use the arrow to
access it, and if you have "Hide when inactive selected" just clicking it once
will bring it into view for the rest of your session.
