Safe mode unavailable

My Windows XP Home SP2 works just fine in normal mode. However, it won't boot
in any of the safe modes. It will load a list of drivers ending with mup.sys
and then reboot.

I can't say what all has happened to this system that may cause this because
I honestly don't remember the last time I booted up in safe mode. It was
maybe two years ago since I used safe mode for startup. All I know is the
last time I wanted to use safe mode, it worked. Now it doesn't.

I've checked everything I can think of but can't find an answer to this very
odd problem.

One reason for a machine not being able to boot into Safe Mode is having
an older version of Nero's InCD installed. Does this fit your situation?

I do have version 4.3.0.3 installed but it has been there for years. Safe
mode has worked subsequent to that installation but it's definitely something
to look at. I'll uninstall and/or update to see what happens. Thank you.

You pulled a needle out of the haystack with that one. Sure enough, I
uninstalled InCD and safe mode was available. Was it something that changed
with XP through an update that causes that version to do that now? I know
it's been installed for more than three years and I can't believe I haven't
booted in safe mode since then.

Funny thing is I went to the Nero website a few weeks ago to check on
updates. For some reason I felt the need. I didn't download any but this was
about two weeks before I even discovered I didn't have safe mode anymore.
Hopefully, the InCD update I'm getting now will fix the problem.

You would be better off not using packet writing software at all!

This is the InCD software which enables you to drag files onto a CD-R
directly from Windows Explorer, or to save onto CD directly from within
applications like Microsoft Word, without using the CD Recording
software that came with your CD-Writer (Nero). While a great and
potentially very useful concept, the limitations of InCD CDs (CDs
created with InCD are only ever guaranteed to be readable in CD Writers
that are the same model as the CD Writer in which the CD was created –
it is not unusual not to be able to read a CD created via InCD, in
another CD-ROM drive) lead us to always recommend its removal. We
advocate to instead always use its sister product, Nero (also called
"Nero Burning ROM"), to create CDs, as that is the only method that
guarantees that you will be able to read the CDs you create in any other
CD, CD-Writer, or DVD drive – a crucial consideration if you are using
CDs for data backups !

Thanks for the info John. I like the way InCD works because I like to run a
batch file backup of my "stuff" to DVD. It works like a champ. I run one
batch file and away it goes. It also copies a new backup of my MS Money data
file to this DVD-RW every time I exit the program.

I don't really know if I could do this using the tools provided in XP. I do
know that the files I make with InCD are perfectly usable and readable in a
Vista computer. This is my "hillbilly" network connection for file transfers.
It works well for transferring files in either direction. InCD is not
installed on the Vista machine.

You could use the other Nero tools. Just keep in mind that if your
CD/DVD reader fails these cd/dvds may be unreadable in another drive, we
have seen posts from users with these kind of problems before.

I'll certainly keep that in mind. I don't see a problem since cdrw disks made
in my cd writer work in my dvd writer of a different brand and both cd and
dvd InCD disks work just fine in a dual layer dvd laptop burner that's a
completely different brand and running a different OS. I hope I never get
burned but I like the utility of operating a dvd as a removable hard disk.
I'll check it out and see if I can make Nero burning rom or something else
suit my needs but I'm not hopeful.

BTW: The updated version of InCD fixed the problem. I have safe mode.

If you really must use InCD, then use DVD+RW disks. The '+' version of the
DVD format contains technology that makes packet format written media much
more reliable.
