Safe Mode Reinstall - Urgent

After removing a virus from a machine (GX270) with Windows XP, it corrupted
the OS and would not allow access to 'msconfig' to turn off safe mode. In an
attempt to repair the OS I ran the repair function off of the reinstall boot
disk. I was not aware that setup would not complete if the computer is in
Safe mode. Now all it will do is restart, try to complete the setup, refuse
it and restart again. Even in the selected startup screen, choosing 'start
windows normally' it will start up in safe mode. Does anyone have any
suggestions how to get out of this vicious circle? Just blowing the machine
away is not an option because this computer has work information on it that
is not backed up.

Any comments would be appreciated...
Thank You

I have a very similar problem I am trying to work thru. ie Safe mode hung
up during virus scan. Until I solve it, I'm doing a work around.
I have e-mailed those documents which I want to keep, to myself. In my
case ,my e-mail is stored in a rermote server and is not actually on my
computer so I can retrieve it should I have to ultimately re-reformat. I use
Yahoo e-mail.
I will post you should I get any significant info on how to get out of safe
mode.

Before you do anything else with it backup the data to start with. There
are several options.

1. Take the drive out of the computer and install it as a slave drive in
another Windows XP or 2000 computer. It should read the drive ok, so you can
copy the data.

2. Create a bootable Bart's PE disk, boot from that, then copy the data to
external USB drive or flash drive.

3. Download a bootable Linux distro called Knoppix. Create a bootable CD
from that, boot from it, and copy the data to USB drive or flash drive, or
if the computer has two CD drives, one of which is a burner, then use the
k3b burning program on the Knoppix CD to burn the data to CD.

4. Take it to a competent computer tech to backup the data.

Hi Rock,

Thanks for the various ways to back-up but I fornd that I could
back-up using Nero 7 .
Do you have any further suggestions to get a normal boot before I
reformat?
