safe mode-no icons

After scanning using adware se and deleted the files it has found, the icons
on the desktop disappears, not even the 'start', it only have the 4 words
'safe mode' at the corners. If I boot up in normal mode, all the icons are
there ................ strange.
In safe mode, in the task manager, if I have new task 'eplorer.exe', it will
open saying 'running' and 'disappear' and if I go to the "process tag", it
will not show up.

Now how do I get the necessary icons in safe mode as I want to do the scan
again. Thanks for your help.

Restart system, tap F8, select "Safe Mode with Networking".
Run a free online antivirus & security check at Trendmicro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Do that. Then follow the steps in following to run other utilities. You'll have to do that in Normal & Safe mode.
(Note you actually have internet access while in "Safe Mode with Networking".)

You are highly urged to follow the steps at
"The Parasite Fight Quick Fix Protocol"
<http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm>

You have to use many utilities to insure your system is free of malware.

In safe mode with networking, the iconsdoes appear. Using external usb ADSL
and when I click the usual icon, the usual dialogue page does not appear for
me to key in the user name/password. Must I use the internal modem instead to
connect to internet? TIA

Some malware on your system is still there and is preventing
explorer.exe from running and/or explorer.exe has been damaged. In all
probability your system is still not clean. It is completely possible
to run antimalware tools from the commandline (without explorer.exe).
Although I respect him greatly, I don't agree with Maurice about doing
an online scan with a possibly still infected machine. Instead, I
suggest getting all necessary tools from a different, known-clean
computer with an Internet connection and a cd burner (or have a usb
thumbdrive with enough capacity to transfer the files). Here are
removal steps to go through systematically:

If the necessary procedures look too difficult - and there is no shame
in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA).

Please follow Malke's advice. It is the sure way to do a cleanup.
My suggestion should be taken only if you have no other means & tools.
And even then, should not be the only program your run for cleanup.

Malke: Best to you & thanks. I'll have to sit down & amend my notes.

The kibbitz felt really nice.

Best as always,
