runtime error

I have Win2000Pro, When I am on any desktop other than an
admin desktop and I try to open the internet by dbl
clicking on the icon I get the message: "microsoft visual
C++ Runtime Library Runtime error
program:C:\WINNT\explorer.exe This application has
requested Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way" ....
When I try to open "my computer" I get this other
message : "microsoft visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime
error program:C:\Program files\Internet
Explorer\explore.exe, This application has requested
Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way" ...
then it removes all my icons and the start menu so I have
to reboot by using task manager.
When I am on any administrator desktop, this does not
happen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think this is a problem with Internet Explorer, per se, it sounds
more like a problem with some plug-in.

Sounds like an ActiveX control or a Browser Helper Object has gone awry.
Download BHOdemon (Google for it), its free, and see if it can't help
straighten things out.

I also started getting the message "microsoft visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime error
program:C:\WINNT\explorer.exe This application has requested Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way". .... Also, several of my programs would not work properly. Skype was one of them.

As long as I didn't click on ok or the close X, I could continue to work in explorer.exe. A new error message would appear with each additonal file listing window I opened.
I read this forum and several others and followed one intruction to download BHODemo which shows you what 'Browser Helper Objects' are installed on your computer. Description and download at: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23611-order,1-page,1-c,security/description.html

I found "SoftAheadCert.dll" as one of the objects running. Further Internet research took me to http://www.softahead.com/ppi/ppi_info.php. Not wanting this on my computer, I disabled it in BHODemo.

The error message is gone and my programs are again running properly. I hope this information helps someone else since I have been helped by forums many times.
