runtime error in outlook when opening program

i receive the following message after choosing the profile when opening
outlook 2002:
mircorsoft visual c++runtime library
runtime error!
program:\c:progra~1\micros~3\office10\outlook.exe
this application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way

i click ok & program closes. if i reopen & select the same file i do not
get the error message & the profile opens. what do i need to do to fix this?
