Runs Slow Sometimes

Sometimes my PC just runs slow. Four out of five days / week, it's just fine.
Then all of a sudden it is sluggish all day long and fine the next day.
Doesn't seem to have anything to do w/antivirus running cause it's not. I've
installed Windows Defender and it says PC is running OK. AVG does not detect
any viruses.

Is there any diagnostic software that I can use to just run PC check to
determine what is going on? Thanks in advance.

Review your System/Application event logs. In many cases there will
be a Warning or Error logged when the system response degrades.

Click Start, Run ( Type ) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
Expand each log and check the Right Pane for Yellow or Red entries
that denote warnings and errors.

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report. Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Is it the same day (and time of day) every week that it's sluggish? If
so, I wonder if a program is set to regularly scan your hard drive (or
something along those lines).

With insufficient information I start with the basics. The system may be
marginal on the other days. I would have asked about Event Viewer errors
but someone else had already asked. Getting users to answer questions
can be hit and miss depending on their understanding of technical terms.
Asking for very specific information like a Disk Defragmenter Report
makes it easy for other person to reply and can throw up all kinds of
useful background information, which you might otherwise find difficult
to get quickly. You will gather from what I have said that fragmentation
of files on the system partition is a small part of the information
being sought by that particular request.

Yes. What's wrong with that? They are all of my own creation. I check to
see that all is relevant and amend where appropriate.

What is the point in rewriting the same material thereby generating
mistakes and omissions. My priority is to help solve problems not to
create a new literary masterpiece every time I post.

I was right... you do use "templates".

In this case - probably not always - two of your suggestions were
completely inappropriate and would require the OP to do more than
necessary.

RAM shortages will have an effect EVERY DAY, not one in five as the OP
described.

DEFRAG needs... ditto.

You need to have method to achieve the right result. It would seem this
is a point beyond your comprehension. You cannot rely on inspired
guesses!

Why don't you concentrate your efforts on trying to help rather than to
score points at the expense of others.

1.CCleaner - Free
Cleans temporary internet files, cookies, history, recent urls, application
MRUs, etc. ...
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
If Windows Defender is utilized go to Applications, under Utilities
uncheck "Windows Defender".

2.Download David H. Lipman's MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL:
http://www.pctipp.ch/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp
English:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/09/scan-your-computer-with-multiple-anti-virus-for-free/

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe {Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS}
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to
go through your FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor
related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- {or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in
Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web
site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and
Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files
or you can download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you
have downloaded the files needed for each scanner you want to use, you
should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key during boot] and re-run the
menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal
Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more
comprehensive PDF help file.
