Running Startup Scripts Appear to Hang Windows XP

Hi am using Microsoft Windows XP, Professional, version 2002, Service Pack 3.
When ever I login to my machine before loading XP, system hangs for 10
minuets.
It showing running startup scripts.

I have tried the solution given in the following link

but under gpedit.msc--> Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Scripts, I
didn't have any scripts to remove.
also I didn’t have anything like Maximum wait time for Group Policy scripts
in Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System->Logon.

Kindly tell me the solution to resolve it
Peoples saying that OS re-format only the solution, which am not ready to do
that.

What is the script doing?

I saw a few months back an awesome server running McAfee Enterprise which
was slowly scanning on startup which had a similar problem. It was using
almost 0% processing power but disabling the virus software as a test solved
the issue. We then worked back from there. Maybe you have a similar issue so
use computer management to connect to the machine & stop the serices.

but it might related with anti virus (Norton)
can u tell me how to stop the specified service.

also i have checked that XP hangs only if my machine is in the network.
if i login after un-plugging network cable its not hanging by running any
startup scripts

Vino,

Whether you don't have access to a source the script is trying to run.
Example: mapped drive & without knowing what the script does it's not going
to be easy to say. Could even be your firewall blocking something

If the script is a batch file then the admins can rem out the lines to
narrow it down to the one line it doesn't like

By pulling the cable out & logging in with your local profile isn't the way
to go because you're stopping those mappings/GPO's reaching your machine.
You have to go back to the administrator & report it as disabling the virus
services without permission could get you into hot water & breach of the
company's policy

i raised this issue to admin team. but thay are telling that OS
re-install is the only solution. either they din understand the problem
exactly or lack of knowledge. is their any way to fix this problem from my
side. since its not happening to my friends who are in the same network. but
still am not able to figure out what the script is running actually. is it
posible to find about the specific script. kindly do the needful.

OS install is the least amount of trouble - sometimes.

If other WS work okay, can you login on some other machine (to the
network) and see what happens?

Have someone else login to the network on your machine. Probably your
machine.

The question is - is the problem your machine or your network login.

If they are running scripts when you login to the network, they are
likely pushing out updates or otherwise updating/controlling your
configuration, so they should be able to tell you what gets run when
somebody logs in (it requires them to look).

I suspect, they have set up some scripts to run to apply something to
your machine, it is failing for some reason and the next time you
login, it wants to run again. It will keep doing so until it succeeds
which may be never if your system or user account is afflicted.

The script may have already run on the other machines and they have
their updates (maybe it took a long time ONCE), but now they are
caught up so logging in works fine for them. If IT doesn't want to
figure it out, reinstalling will probably fix it and that is the least
amount of effort for them (and you will go away).

If you start screwing around with those timeouts, you can tell XP to
just give up after a time, but that is probably not what you need to
do. You "need" the scripts to run and finish whatever they are trying
to do.

Go with what the administrators say because it's down to them to support it

Flatterning the machine is a quick & simple solution as they should have a
Ghost/WDS image to pull from the network. Shouldn't take them much longer
than 20-30 mins

Make sure you've backed-up your files but they should do that for you

login from different machine rite. but system gets hanged before my login.
after showing "running startup scripts" for 10 mins only Ctrl+Alt+Del screen
is appearing, so that i can login. so i hope its not problem with my userid,
even i logged from different machine. so the problem with my machine. any
solution? Re-installing OS is costly in my situation. if no other way i ll go
for it anyway. is that any chace to print the script in the backend? so that
i can ask admin team, " Hay boss this s script screwing my machine"

if they (administrator) told the exact reason for this issue, i might agree
for OS-reinstall. simply they are saying like "OS corrupted" how i can accept
it. they have no idea about the script which is running (trying to run) for
me alone

so meant we done have any option to fix this from my machine?

Well, it sounds unfortunate for you and there are many variables. I
think by "costly" you mean in units of time and inconveneince... Put
a little painful in there too.

After some amount of time, someone will just say: this is taking too
long to figure this out, I don't have any idea, etc. and you will have
to choose to live with it (leaving you will some unknown problems(s),
or start over! Start over is the for sure way to relieve the problem.

Some could look at the script(s) and run them one at a time, watch it
run, see where it is hanging up, etc., but that takes the resources of
some other person.

If I was Mr. IT, I would make you feel real good about your personal
data being there when you got done.

Why wouldn't they know about the script running? It's down to them because
they shouldn't allow you to run your own startup scripts

If you logon another machine does the same hang? If not then it's a machine
issue, if it does it's a permission issue

hi i solved the problem. but still im not sure how i solved it,

i just enabled show startup scripts visible from

gpedit -> comp. configuration ->system->logon->scripts

then i restared my machine. asusual machine was hanging by showing "running
startup scripts", that time its just showed the following script in command
prompt,

'\\domain-56745\sy\domain-56745\Policies\{37543E8C-A9F4-4521-A0C7-1E
5454553}\Machine\Scripts\Startup'
CMD.EXE was started with the above path as the current directory.
UNC paths are not supported. Defaulting to Windows directory.

then just opened the above location manually. that startup folder was empty.

thats it. thats issue is gone. i dono how its fixed. now my machine not
showing any.

might be network connectivity. any clue?

It's not an IP address issue as you are probably using DHCP & can
release/renew to redo it

Just pass it to the admins for a rebuild. Why are you so reluctant to do
this?
