Running SAS and U160 concurrently?

Rajeev N Revankar

Hello,

I have both SAS and U160 drives I'd like to use at the same time. I have
an Adaptec 29160 and a 4805SAS.
When I add the 4805 to my MB, on boot up the U160 drives register fine
with the 29160, but when it gets to the 4805 it says: can not invoke ROM
And the SAS drives do not register.
But when I take out the 29160, the 4805 registers the SAS drives.

I have the 4805 in a PCI-E slot, and the 29160 in a PCI slot.

Can both of these controller cards be run at the same time? Or is it the
specifics of my MB that does not allow this?

What if any MB support this?

Thanks for any help!

Rajeev

MB: MSI K8N Neo4 (7125)
WinXP 64

Shoot, is that damned Adaptec website down, again?

The Adaptec site is now working.

Still need help with this. I contacted MSI about the MB I have and they
said that since I have a RAID supported MB, I can only use one of the
controller cards, but if I get a MB w/o RAID, then I can use both
controller cards.
I don't know if this is true for all MB's?

Seems like Adaptec did screw up again. I have no doubt they
could have made these two compatible. I do not see
your mainboard being responsible for the issue.

You may be able to get help form Adaptec, but in my experience
they do not even know their own products in tech support there.

Personally I have had two very bad experiences with Adaptec
and I think their products are substandard trash. The only
think that keeps them going is that many people believe
them to be a reputable manufacturer.

Yes, and?
What did it say about incompatability between those 2 devices and what
does that tell you.

Your controllers were stolen items so you don't have TSID codes to ask
Technical Support your questions?

You mean you want us to do your googling for you.

That's nicer words for that they ****ed up in the bios department.
There are no duplications in chipsets with what you are adding, so
it's not that. That leaves the MB bios.

From MSI, and probably not even that.

See if you can disable any devices that you don't use in the BIOS.
Even disable any that you do use just to see if it makes a difference.
That would give you some clue.

Do you have the latest bios for the ASC 29160.

No, they are not stolen... 4805SAS was bought used from a database tester,
and the 29160 I bought retail a LONG time ago.
Anyway, the Adaptec cards are not the issue.... They work fine together as
I disabled the onboard SATA RAID. Both U160 and SAS drives are
recognized.
Now I just have to contact other MB manufacturers to see if all 3 can be
supported.

Of course they do, as there is no evidence of any problems listed on the
Adaptec website for this combination.
as I disabled the onboard SATA RAID.

Right, just like I expected.

Sure, why bother looking for bios updates if you can do that.
