Running Logoff Scripts

Our workstations are running XP Pro and our Server is 2003. Several
workstations pause for a very long time at the "running logoff scripts"
screen before shutting down. To my knowledge there are no logoff scripts
created or being used. What could be causing this and is there a fix?

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge base for "running logoff scripts" but
there weren't any articles.

Thank you.

Thanks for the info. There are no scripts under
computer\configuration\windows\settings\scripts\logoff. In fact there is no
logoff folder at all.

However, under the user\configuration there is something in logoff and it
refers to UserLogonInfo.vbs.

I have no idea what this is. Assuming it is a default. We did not put it
there. Any other help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you have Group Policy logoff scripts enabled somewhere in the
domain. Try running rsop.msc on one of those computers [rsop.msc in the run
box] and it should show what the scripts are and the controlling GPO. After
the report is done you need to expand the categories to see all the details.
In particualr look under computer configuration/windows
settings/scripts/logoff.

Good catch as I should have mentioned to look there also [the computer
configuration would actually be shutdown script] and that definitely would
be your culprit. It would seem that someone with elevated privileges to your
domain put it there or ran an application that did and it would not be there
by default. The data of the that file may give you a clue. I am not real
good at .vbs but if you right click that .vbs file and select edit you can
read it to get an idea what it is for and you could paste the text in a
reply an maybe myself or someone could help with that.

If you are not sure exactly where it is located you can search for that file
by name though for sure it is the sysvol share on the server under the
folder for the Group Policy [shown there as a GUID] that is applying it.
Since rsop.msc shows the Group Policy applying it if need be you could edit
that Group Policy to "remove" it as a logoff script if you are SURE it is
not needed for your situation but in any case do not delete that file unless
you are POSITIVE that it is not needed.

I didn't mention that we are using Symantec Corp Ed Anti-Virus, and the
server is managing the updates to the workstations. Wonder if that put it in?
Of course I can see it using a script at logon to see if definitions are up
to date, but not at logoff. I will try your suggestions. Thank you.
