Have you tried using 'DosBOX' (
http://www.dosbox.com/)? Alternatively,
if you have Vista Business, then you can download the free Microsoft
Virtual PC and use it to install your old version of Windows XP.

I have just tried DosBox and for some reason it won't allow me to enter the
colon or foreward slash to input the drive parameters. I guess I must have
an odd keyboard to not map right. It is a Microsoft IntelliSense wireless
keyboard and mouse setup. I even tried an older HP keyboard to no avail. It
was a nice advice on the Virtual PC, but unfortunately I am using the Premium
Home version of Vista and it is not supported. Any other ideas? Thanks for
helping so far.

allows me to input from the keyboard of the laptop just fine, just not with
Vista on the desktop

I did not set anything, just used the software as it came.
The keyboard is a Microsoft Wireless Comfort 1.0

menu, just type dosbox in search), look for this entry:

default US keyboard layout, changing it to 'gr' activates for example the
support for german keyboards. several european languages are supported
internal, watch the readme file for all supported languages. for other

Do what I did,get a KVM switch, and a small form factor (like XPC by shuttle)

You could even get a decent used PC and Salvation Army or Goodwill for DOS.
Why bother trying to get the new stuff to run it? Just keep a PC configured

Yeah, I have an old DOS 486 in storage, complete with a SB16 and a Roland
MT-32 Synth module (the card version, forget what it was called), 80meg HD,
5.25" and 3.5" floppies, I love it. One of my oldest computers, next to my
original Atari 800.

I have some information about it from Czech Republick. Microsoft implemented
into Windows Vista new drivers for graphic cards that is not compatible with
any MS-DOS application and taht is not compatible with any 3Dfx OpenGL
application. I wait that Microsoft improve it, because it is not possible
install old graphic drivers from Windows XP or older and DosBOX it is not a
good idea. DosBOX is not treatment from Microsoft and it slow down your
computer very drastically.

No S*it Sherlock, DOSBox is an EMULATOR, it emulates old hardware using new
hardware combined with complex software routines. Yes, it runs slow, unless
you have a Quad Core with a lot of CPU power, it will run slower than you'd
expect it too.
BUT, it is a PROGRAM, the rest of your system runs normally, and when you
quit the program, like all other programs your system (should) return to
normal.
Old DOS Games + New Operating Systems/New Hardware = Sadness.

Read the information there. A lot of DOS games run great under DOSBox, some
do not. They actually have a list of which games work on their site
somewhere. If you're comfortable working with DOS programs, then DOSBox
should be easy for you to setup and get running. If you're not used to
editing text files read their tutorials for help.
There are other ways to get DOS games to work, Virtual PC 2007 isn't too bad
if you don't plan to run heavy 3D games, but the sound emulation isn't that
great. DOSBox actually emulates a good ole SB16 and GUS. You'll get better
results with DOSBox.
Respond here if you need help, but if you search around this newsgroup for
DOSBox posts, or search Google you'll find more than enough information to
get your old games running.
Vista doesn't use new drivers, they simply moved the drivers from Kernal
protected ram to User normal ram. Results are you don't have to reboot if
your video driver crashes, but there are some compatibility issues with
older XP drivers. Vista and XP never really ran DOS titles very well, mainly
because PCs no longer use ISA audio cards and a lot of older routines were
simply removed from Windows and todays PC hardware.
Yes, keeping a fully functional Pentium with ISA versions of the Sound
Blaster 16 or Gravis UltraSound is THE best way to ensure your old games
keep working. Hard part is finding hardware that still works. I highly
recommend checking sites like Craigslist.org or ebay.com for hardware. Good

There's nothing indicating that Vista doesn't work with this game. There =

You said you have an HP, but HP has literally HUNDREDS of different PCs =
in their support area. Does your HP have a model number? It's usually on =
the front of the case, it says something like "HP Media Center m1234n" =
the last part is the important part.
I would say you just need to update your computers drivers. New =
hardware, new OS, new problems being constantly fixed, if you don't keep =
your drivers up to date (even on a new computer) you might run into =
strange problems like this.
I don't know what you mean by "Security" shield either. Is it like a =
pop-up message that appears on the screen, or is it just like a black =
box or something else?

DosBox is absolutly great...
DosBox is absolutly great... As I know it simply overloads the CPU with
a "few" cycles, so the games won't run wild on you machine. You can
further adjust that with the function keys. I have tried Laser Squad,
Aethra Chronicles, Prehistorik, Prince of Persia, Blood and Duke Nukem
3D. All running just fine even from Vista. I absolutely suggest using
the most recent version. The earlier ones seem a bit bugged...

Best way to configure DosBox:
Open dosbox.conf with a text editor and find these settings and change
them to the settings I have them set to:

This way you don't have to adjust CPU cycles. Results are perfect in
Wolfenstein 3D, don't even realize I'm in DosBox in fullscreen.

The license key for whatever OS you're installing. Obviously, DOS doesn't
need such a thing, but if you're installing XP into a virtual machine, it's
just like installing it on a real machine.
