running cmd.exe

I updated from W 98 SE to XP. I had set up the dos prompt
screen under W 98 using an escape sequence in my
autoexec.bat file that depended on ansi.sys being loaded.

Now when I use cmd.exe, my prompt is the command string
that I cannot change. I can change it on screen but where
are the (real) old autoexec.bat commands located in XP?
I've edited every autoexec.* file I can find but still get
the command string.

While this is not a big issue, I also want to open that
window at the root directory.

Thanks for any ideas.

You can set environment variables, for the system overall or for the
users, in XP via:
My Computer/Properties/Advanced, then Environment Variables button.

Re what directory it gets started in, right mouse click on the icon you
are using for this command, and change the "start in" property.

Thanks to Rob for the answer to this question. I forgot
where I posted it and have been searching for it. The
solution works like a dream.
