can I run chkdsk on a floppy that windows XP is detecting as unformatted.
Will chkdsk run from the GUI [right/click>properties>tools>check disk]
there are files on the disk saved from another PC but now this WinXP PC
says...
the disk in a:/ in not formatted.

Format the floppy on XP, then take the floppy to the other computer and
save the files again. If the files aren't available, get them off the
floppy before the format. The problem stems from XP requiring a
slightly different format; actually, a bit is set, iirc.

fail or what???

It's worth trying; chkdsk shouldn't write over data.. Sorry, don't know
from experience though.

Um, it is dangerous. Chkdsk makes guesses about the filesystem on the
disk, and may get it wrong.

Can you chkdsk a floppy?

Cheers,
