Rundll32.exe

Rundll32.exe is taking 100% of CPU cycles. It starts
when running IE and the process will not end until I
reboot and force and end to the process. The task will
not end in task manager at all unless I do reboot. I
check the knowledge base and got a related article that
suggested I needed SP1.0a. I am running SP1 with a
Thinkpad. I have installed the google toolbar and down
to windows updates to IE. Help please.

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show?

Nothing. It a brand new computer with Norton and has had
full scan as well as updated virus definitions.

Let me clarify my last response. It's a brand new
computer. I'm running Norton Antivirus 2003 with updated
virus definitions. I started noticing the problems after
I did windows update. I was going to try and unistall
the updates to see if that would help.

Thoughts?

Since you didn't say, did you also scan for spyware? Basically, you want
to eliminate the possibility that unwelcome programs/processes are
running before you start uninstalling updates. Yes, some updates have
caused problems for people in the past, but your prime consideration is
safety and security, so you really want to keep your system patched.
Since you have a new Dell, unless you went through and uninstalled
stuff (again, since you didn't say, there isn't any way for me to know;
I'm not trying to demean your mad skilz) there are things running in
the background that don't need to be there. For instance, the Dell
Media Experience is an unpleasant little pain that should be gotten rid
of. The same goes for the Dell Support thingy that insists on running
in the background.

Acutally, it's an IBM T41. I have run Adware 6.0. I had
some guy come bye and take a look. He couldn't help.
Told me it might be because I upgraded the memory with a
non-IBM component (Crucial part).

The problem might coincide with java. Seems like I get
the error with a Java Applet runs. No way to know for
sure.

BTW, there are two other strands on this board and
neither were answered.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Get ToolbarCop and see what browser plugins are loaded. Before deleting anything, please post the contents here.

Try disabling this BHO {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872. Don't delete it yet. This version of ToolbarCop has no Undo feature. [The Pro version creates registry backup automatically.]

Even better option: I would create a System Restore point and disable/delete one by one till the problem is solved. Now that you spot the plugin causing the problem. Rollback the system to the created restore point and delete the problem child alone.

Remember, the BHO and CLSID entries you've spotted are legit ones [not malware]. So, it's difficult to say which one is causing this problem. Some users say it's the norton BHO [above].
