Run Scan in Safe Mode

Is there a way to run a Defender complete scan in Safe Mode? I keep readng
in newsgroups that spyware and anti-virus programs should periodically be run
in Safe Mode to find items which "hide" and can't be found in regular mode.
Have tried it twice with Defender, with no success.

Thank you.

Hello Abeesgram, welcome back,

The quick scan is very useful. It looks at all of the actively running
processes on the machine, as well as files that are pointed to by the various
registry entries and other locations used by spyware to start automatically
or otherwise interfere with your system.

If you have a particular piece of spyware or other unwanted software that is
detected by Windows Defender, the vast majority of the time it should be
detected by the quick scan.

The full scan, in addition to performing all of the checks in a quick scan,
also examines every single file on your system. This is a quite
time-consuming operation if you have a lot of files.

I would always start with a quick scan - if it gives you a clean bill of
health, you can be pretty confident in the results. If the quick scan finds
anything, you probably should follow it up with a full scan to find any
additional junk that the malicious software dropped on your machine that may
have been missed by the quick scan. It's also a good idea to schedule the
full scan to happen periodically (every night, for instance) at a time when
you are not typically using your computer and the added time to scan all of
the files won't be noticed.

Abeesgram, can you expand what is the problem having "no success".

To reply to the first part of your message, I understand the difference
between Quick Scan and Complete Scan. I run CompleteScan weekly, at the same
time I do a full AV scan, Ccleaner, etc.

After reading that it is a good idea to run those items in Safe Mode, I did
so. All worked well except for Defender. There was no response from the
program when I clicked on the "scan" section of the page. Made me wonder if
Defender is not designed to run in Safe Mode, prompting my question here.

Thank you, sir.

Hi Abeesgram,

WD is designed to run in safe-mode, unless something is out of aligment.

You can repair Windows Defender.

First exit WD, click the down arrow to the right of the white question mark

in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender; using Add or Remove

Programs in Control Panel. Click WD and click Change. Click Next, and then

click Updªte.

If you still have the same "no success".

First exit WD, click the down arrow to the right of the white question mark

in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender; using Add or Remove

Programs in Control Panel. Click WD and click Support Information and click

Repair.

Reboot.

Let us know how it works ºut

Defender has always scanned while in SAFE mode for me, and I just confirmed
that the latest release still does. I'm not sure of why it wouldn't work
for you as well. Entered /SAFEBOOT using msconfig... with no networking.
Perhaps you could try a repair of Defender?

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0

Engine Version: 1.1.2204.0

Definition Version: 1.15.2336.7

BTW "abeesgram", Thanks for posting back and thanking another very dedicated
and knowledgeable userand helper. That's always a nice jester when we get
back a post indicating if the suggestions were helpful or not.
