rule for clearing envelope icon from tray?

I've set up some rules to direct spam from my inbox to my deleted or junk
mail boxes, but I can't seem to make the envelope icon that appears with spam
follow the rule. I have to open the mail, mark it as read, or delete it in
order to clear the icon from the tray, despite the fact that I already have
"clear message flag" and "mark as read" and "delete it" as descriptions of
the rule. Any suggestions?
