Hi Jake,

I'd like to perform a clean boot procedure to
troubleshoot the problem:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig.exe in the
Open box, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and
then click to clear the following check boxes:
- Process Config.sys File
- Process Autoexec.bat File
- Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
- Process System.ini File
- Process Win.ini File
- Load Startup Group Items
3. Click OK, and then restart your computer when you
are prompted to do so.
4. If the problem is resolved at this time, please
view the "Narrowing the Focus" section in the
following article for detailed information about how
to narrow down the issue by using the System
Configuration tool:

How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows

Hi Jake,

Usually random issues are very hard to troubleshoot.
I suggest that you use the "setup /nd" command to
repair Windows 98. Using the setup /nd command
bypasses any migration dynamic-link libraries (DLLs)
during the reinstallation of Windows 98, Windows 98
Second Edition. It will replace all the system files.

1. Boot your computer using a Windows 98/ME Startup
disk with "Start Computer with CD-ROM support" option.

2. Insert your Windows 98 Setup CD-ROM to the drive,
type the following commands:

<CD-ROM drive>: <Enter> (If you CD-ROM drive is E:,
then please type E: and press Enter.)

setup /nd <Enter>

3. Go through the whole procedure to reinstall
Windows in the current system folder.

Important Notes:

- Any Windows Update Web site download that
overwrites any system file.

- Any security update that uses a migration DLL.

- Any service packs.

- Any Microsoft Office updates or service packs.

- Any Windows component version updates (including
Microsoft Windows Media Player, Microsoft NetMeeting,
Microsoft Outlook Express, or Microsoft Internet
Explorer components)

- Any version of Internet Explorer that is later than
the version that is installed with the operating
system

If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me
know. I am glad to be of assistance.

Sincerely,

William Wang

You may need new video drivers. Check the site for your video board
manufacturer. Meanwhile you can do the following:
1. Use the default mouse pointers.
2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (For Win 98, Start |
Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will
see little, if any, performance degradation.
4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.

If you have an ATI video board, try adding these lines to System.ini

To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of the Schannel.dll file from the Microsoft Internet Explorer compact disc (CD) to the Windows\System folder. To do this, follow these steps:

Im running IE6, V6.0.2800.1106, does this apply too?
You may need new video drivers. Check the site for your video board manufacturer.

Checked with manuf http://www.sis.com/
Seems like im running latest updates
Meanwhile you can do the following:
1. Use the default mouse pointers.

not sure what you mean here... and how mouse properties could influence my prob
2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.

Increasing or decreasing?
It was at 16bit, took it to 256 colors, and that is insufficient, so i took bat to 16 bit colors
There is 32 bit colors but I dont need that, besides it would take more processing overhead i think
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (For Win 98, Start |
Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will
see little, if any, performance degradation.

I have taken back acceleration by 25% , was at full, we'll see if it brings something
4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

Aaaaww... and i like the clouds - lol
Do you think this or adds to cazusing the crashes?
Please elaborate
If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.

see above

Im running IE6, V6.0.2800.1106, does this apply too?

Extract it from the CAB files in C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files.
Checked with manuf http://www.sis.com/
Seems like im running latest updates

not sure what you mean here... and how mouse properties could
influence my prob

The mouse pointers affect video.
Increasing or decreasing?
either

It was at 16bit, took it to 256 colors, and that is insufficient, so
i took bat to 16 bit colors
There is 32 bit colors but I dont need that, besides it would take
more processing overhead i think

I have taken back acceleration by 25% , was at full, we'll see if it
brings something

Aaaaww... and i like the clouds - lol
Do you think this or adds to cazusing the crashes?
Please elaborate

Buggy video drivers often cause IE crashes. IE stresses video drivers more
than most programs.
If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.

see above
If you have an ATI video board, try adding these lines to System.ini

[display]
DevBMP=0 <--- That's a zero

I dont know, how do i find out

I should have edited that line out. You have an SIS board, not ATI.
These is some info about mainboard

Additional question :

can bios settings help to solve?

Probably not.
found this, and not sure how to handle

AGP Aperture Size Choose 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB,
128MB, or 256MB. Memory-mapped,
graphics data structures can reside in the
Graphics Aperture. Use the default setting.

Thanks Frank

Ignore that last item.

Whew.......

Hello William
Thanks for response

If I read you right this would involve drastically - and riskful - remedies
Before that, I have a couple questions

1. Will the update asp at MS update site automatically know it has to deliver all the updates to me?
Do I have to remove previous updates on my machine?

2. Is it possible application programs 3rd parties need to alter system files?
I vagely remember issues with mfc42.dll upon installing a schematic application program

3. How big is the risk I endup with a bunch of unusable applications?

4. This is a tricky one... how come the same error has produced on my second machine which has nothing to do with this one?
That one runs win98SE and this one 98FE, applications I run are different on both machines...
What they have in common is IE6...

5. I have run sfc a number of times... and I recently discovered In this newsgroup I have used it wrong
It never gave me "file such and such has changed, do you want to reinstall from cd"
It just adopted the new version silently... maybe there is the culprit
Is there any way to see some history?

I'd appreciate your comments on above

As the erroneous behaviour is very intermittant, I would like to wait a bit longer and further monitor this thread
Maybe there are more ways to troubleshoot whats really going on

Any advice welcome

Thanks for your concern

Hi Jake,

Below are the answers to your question.
1. Will the update asp at MS update site
automatically know it has to deliver all the updates
to me?
Do I have to remove previous updates on my machine?

Windows Update site can detect the updates that have
been overwritten and can deliver the updates. You
don't need to remove the previous updates.
2. Is it possible application programs 3rd parties need to alter system files?
I vagely remember issues with mfc42.dll upon
installing a schematic application program

Yes.
3. How big is the risk I endup with a bunch of
unusable applications?

"Setup /ND" should not make you lose all program,
however, the following will lose:

- Any service packs
- Any Microsoft Office updates or service packs
- Any Windows component version updates (including
Microsoft Windows Media Player, Microsoft NetMeeting,
Microsoft Outlook Express, or Microsoft Internet
Explorer components)
- Any version of Internet Explorer that is later than
the version that is installed with the operating
system
- Any Windows Update Web site download that
overwrites any system file
- Any security update that uses a migration DLL

Please be sure to backup all the important data
before doing "Setup /ND".
4. This is a tricky one... how come the same error
has produced on my second machine which has nothing
to do with this one?
That one runs win98SE and this one 98FE,
applications I run are different on both machines...
What they have in common is IE6...

Are the hard wares on the two machines identical? Are
they using the same display card and the same driver?
5. I have run sfc a number of times... and I
recently discovered In this newsgroup I have used it
wrong
It never gave me "file such and such has changed, do you want to reinstall from cd"
It just adopted the new version silently... maybe there is the culprit
Is there any way to see some history?

You may want to view the System File Checker log file
(Sfclog.txt).

This issue can also be caused by the display card
driver or unstable physical device. I'd like to
unplug all the unnecessary devices and use another
display card to test the problem. Also, I'd like to
test the problem in Safe Mode to see if it still
occurs.

Sincerely,

Extract it from the CAB files in C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files.

I dont have such folder .....
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration.

This seems to influence... no crash since then

Any suggestions on Williams approach? see backwards in thread

Thanks Frank

I haven't used Win98 for years, but his approach sounds reasonable.
I don't know how you got IE6 installed without getting C:\Windows\Windows
Update Setup Files.

Hi Frank,

It looks like I am in a dead end street here, but...
thanks to your help the problem went away or decreased, havent had any crashes till now
Its my convince the accelleration thing was bugging
I have archived this thread for future reference
Regarding the IE6 installation... it did install, and I have no idea what has happened to the update setup folder
I still have a few other threads going, if its not to much bother, I'd like you to have a look...
Again, thanks for your help and sharing your skills

If turning down graphics acceleration fixed it, you need new video drivers.
