RPC fails to start after upgrade to XP SP2

The service "Remote Procedure call (RPC)" doesn't start after upgrading to
SP2. When I try to start it manually, I get "Error 5: Access denied".
Of course, many of the other services depend on it, so they don't start as
well.
I am user administrator, with ownership and full access to everything under
\windows.
Removing SP2 does't work either, because of the same problem...
