RPC Error on Windows XP during On-Line Session

A friend has just upgraded to Win XP and encountered
Modem problems. Getting him on-line with another
(external) Modem to download XP drivers, when downloading
a file we encountered the following error message:
Remote Procedure Call Service terminated unexpectedly.
Shutdown initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM.

The system shuts itself down. Tried a different file to
download and same sitution - grateful for advice.

My Browser didn't initially allow me to see that
