Routing through Win2k server.

I have a need to use a Win2k server to act as a router for
Internet access.

The setup is an existing Cable modem which is accessed
through a Sonicwall firewall. We hope to use the Win2k
server as the default gateway on the network. The idea is
to also setup this server with a dial-out Internet access,
and use this as a backup solution if the Cable system is
down. So, I believe, some sort of "dead-gateway"
detection is needed.

We would like to do this without purchasing anything
extra. If there ends up being a need to spend money I
would just replace the Sonicwall with a Symantec
VPN/Firewall device which includes this solution in the
box.

Any KB, or Technets articles on how to set this up?

If it helps, all of the workstations are Win2k Pro.

Thanks in advance....

You can certainly use NAT in Remote Access to use your server as an internet gateway,
but I don't think you can configure it to dial out to the internet automatically
through rras as a backup. You could configure a second gateway on the rras server but
the server itself would then try the alternate gateway if the cable modem was down.
You might be able to set up an alternate router device as the alternate gateway that
could dial out to the internet. D-link makes a cheap device that supposedly can do
such though I have not tried it. The problem with alternate gateway in Windows 2000
is that as long as a gateway works, it stays the default gateway and doesn't
automatically switch back to your "preferred" gateway like a dedicated device acting
as a gateway/firewall could. -- Steve

You mean you can't change the network address scope it will issue with it's
built in dhcp allocator via properties/address assignments? I have never had
that problem. I would look in Event Viewer for any pertinent messages or try
to disable and re enable rras to see if it helps. Possibly a needed service
is disabled or will not start. You can configure a W2K computer to default
settings for services that are automatic by using secedit as described in
the link below and appending " /areas services " to the end of the command
which will then only reset services. --- Steve

Steven, yes . The address assigment cannot be done to the nat server
ip. What are those services needed by nat ?

I don't know all the specific services, but sometimes changing services back to
default may help and then if you want to restrict a service, do it one at a time.
Even that may not fix the problem. Otherwise consider reinstalling your service pack
or an in place upgrade of the operating system, though you would need to reinstall
first your service pack and then critical updates. That often fixes a lot of
issues.--- Steve
