Router & UPnP in Messenger

R

Rich

Hi Jonathan ,
I've been reading alot of posts . I saw a request by you
to do the following :

if you or your contact are using a router (with UPnP
support), you may need to remove the current port
forwardings. To do so, click Start, All Programs,
Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-
click the "Internet Gateway" (should be under the
Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties. Choose
the Settings button, click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr'
entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close
Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit),
then restart Messenger.

When I go into my network connections it only shows the
following :

1394 connection (1394 net adapter) & Local Area
Connection (3com) . I do not see the Internet Gateway to
try your instructions .

Thank You ,

Rich

Greetings Rich,

You may just want to check that you have that you have UPnP services installed in Windows XP.
To do so, click Start, then Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, then Add/Remove
Windows Components, click Networking Services, then the Details button, and verify that
'Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client' and 'Universal Plug and Play' are
checked and click OK.

Hi Jonathan ,
I had read other posts on how to do that . UPnP was not
enabled so I added it , but still have the same problem .
Apparently microsoft wants to phase out Netmeeting and
replace all it's workings with messenger so I wanted to
focus on getting messenger working properly . Currently I
have more success with Netmeeting .

For instance I'm trying to communicate with another
party running XP Pro like myself . In NM we can connect
and chat , transfer files , they can hear and see me but
I cannot hear or see them . I connect to them using their
IP address .

Now , In Messenger we can chat but if we try a video or
voice conversation , sometimes they can hear me but not
see me . I cannot hear or see them . When it does not
work at all , at the bottom of the messenger window it
will say "Connecting to (the other party's) computer and
then we get the following error message :

"The network or computer you are trying to reach is
experiencing a problem. Please try again later."

In Network connections I right clicked on the 3com Icon
(I assume that is my local network connection) but I
disabled the QoS Packet Scheduler , so would this matter
as far as my internet connection ? On their machine they
can see the Internet Gateway icon so I had them disable
the QoS there .

I have Norton Internet Security 2003 , I went in a
configured all the messenger icons to "Permit All" .

If I send them a file in messenger , it works . If they
try to send one to me , I accept it but it waits and then
says the transfer was unsuccessful . Now in NM we can
transfer files back an forth and that was before doing
any reconfiguration of either system (whether Norton ,
QoS etc.) . So for whatever reason it seems that (on
their side) the data transmission is not working
properly . They then hooked up with someone on Yahoo IM
and they both could see and hear each other . Therefore
I'm assuming it is a configuration problem with messenger
and NM for that matter . What say you ?

Thanks ,

Rich
