Router stopped working

My second computer, which has been successfully wirelessly hooked up for 3
years stopped working. A friend has determined that it is my router that is
not working correctly. I went to Best Buy to purchase a new one and the
Geeks told me that it is most likely NOT the router. That Microsoft Updates
probably downloaded an update that saw my router as a security problem and
disabled it. They want tons of money to come out to my house to fix this
problem. does anyone know how to fix this with outout the Geek squad
breaking my bank? Thanks!

Buy the router, hook it up and see if it fixes it.
If so - you spent your $30-$60 and you are done.

Also - get the latest hardware driver from the manufacturer's web page for
the wireless network card in your second machine and install it.

There are too many things which could have caused this problem, and the
Geeks are fools and you should never trust any technical information
provided at Best Buy.

What do you see when you view Available Wireless Networks?

Is your wireless device on your PC working without an error?

Have you reset the wireless device that you connect too? Resetting it,
which is common when you are on the phone with the internet providers
support group would invalidate your WEP/WPA key if you had one.

Have you factory reset your old wireless router and tried to set it up
again?

Purchasing a new wireless router is cheap and can be returned if it
doesn't work. You will need to setup a new connection to it, and you
should be using WPA-PSK instead of WEP or no-encryption.
